Here are some facts that you might want to know about tsunamis and how you can possibly save lives, not your just your own, but the lives of those who loved him as well.
- Before the first wave of the tsunami hits, the shoreline moves away tremendously and may even expose the sea or ocean floor and leave a bounty of dried fish. If you happen to see this, never let your curiosity get the better of you and immediately run to higher ground.

- Tsunami only affect shallow water or coastal areas. When the tsunami hit areas of deep water, it is just out as medium to large ocean wave. The physics of tsunamis shows that while traveling in shallow water, its height increases up to a hundred feet (100 m) high, in extreme cases.
- An earthquake is not the only cause of tsunamis, tidal waves can also be generated by meteorites falling on a large body of water, a volcanic eruption, landslide or any event that moves a large amount of water.
- Pets and wild animals can detect approaching tsunami or any disorder affecting normal daily events. As noted by the tsunami last December 26, 2004, the statistics of animals that have been affected by the tsunami were very very small and even negligible compared to loss of life. Scientist and experts attribute this to animal lovers, in tune with the senses and senstitive animals compared with the senses of human beings.
- Tsunamis can also be identified in advance with a Tsunameter, a device that can detect an approaching Tidal Wave. Unfortunately, few countries could afford this device. Sri Lanka has seen a aqcuiring, but the project was not pushed through.
